Who are we?

INDLELA means "The Way" in Zulu
INDLELA is a non-profit organisation based in Durban North, whose primary objective is to oversee the work carried out by a number of community projects working into the North Durban area. It serves as a covering body - hence the umbrella in the logo - for several projects, which have a proven track record and share a common purpose: supporting those in need in the North Durban Community..

The projects were formed under the guidance of the 'Church of the Good Shepherd' (COGS) in Mackeurtan Avenue, Durban North, a church which has a vision to impact their community. INDLELA is registered with the Department of Social Development as a Non-Profit organisation (037-703-NPO), and was constituted in July 2004. A copy of the constitution is available on request.

The purpose of INDLELA is to create an environment where these projects can develop and grow to their full potential.
These projects currently include:

  • Feeding Programme - a feeding program that provides daily food to over 1 800 children daily in schools along North Coast Road, Durban North and in formal and informal crèches in the Amaoti township. We have two industrial kitchens.
  • Fair Havens Transition Home - a home for abandoned babies that require adoption into a family environment.
  • Life Skills Programme - HIV Prevention initiative into schools as part of their Life Orientation Class. In order to assist the educational objectives there are numerous other activities including : literacy program, homework clubs, holiday clubs and classroom painting opportunities.

INDLELA has people, structures and processes in place that enable it to significantly expand its community impact. With the ongoing support of individuals and businesses, INDLELA will continue to ensure the effective utilisation of volunter efforts, donated funds, donated items, and donated provisions which are receieved on an ever increasing basis. In addition, further stability and continuity to the various projects can be provided, which is important in ensuring INDLELA's ongoing long-term community contribution and impact.

INDLELA has also developed a reputation for being an organisation of integrity within the NPO community, and has built up a network of relationships creating a gateway to the wider caring community. We believe it is important for us to communicate and pass on access to other projects as well.

When you look behind all the projects and structures, INDLELA is really all about people caring for people!

INDLELA ensures that there is good corporate governance, accountability by the leadership, transparent and responsible handling of funding, and maintaining a focus that is in line with the vision for each project. The INDLELA Management Team is primarily comprised of volunteers who are business and church leaders.

Partnering with INDLELA is a way for you and your organisation to become a part of what INDLELA is all about, namely Caring for Our Community. Your contributions, support and involvement will help ensure that INDLELA can continue to expand its supprt and care for the community through the varied projects it is involved with.

In addition, organisations are required by the national BEE and SED (previously CSI) initiatives to achieve and maintain specific scores if they are to obtain certification, which will increase their ability to compete for business in the South african environment. INDLELA can help your organisation meet these requirements, and will provide the required documentation regarding your organisations's support of its programs.

INDLELA will also endeavour to provide oportunities to raise the profile of your organisations community involvement should you so wish. This will be done through future exposure in INDLELA brochures, promotions in local and regional papers and website links to INDLELA.

In addition, opportunities exist for your organisation to partner in certain specific projects should you and your staff wish to get involved in community programs on a more personal practical level.

So often we forget that giving gladdens the heart of the giver as much as the heart of the receiver. We look forward to partnering with you so that together we can put "Caring for the Community" into action to an even greater extent.
